About the UM6P-Rothamsted-Cranfield Partnership:
An international academic partnership between Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), in Morocco, and two of the UK’s leading agricultural research institutions – Rothamsted Research and Cranfield University – to build doctoral and postdoctoral research capacity for African agriculture.
Up to 20 early-career researchers in the agricultural sector will be supported through the partnership, based both in Morocco and the UK. The partnership comes on the back of growing relations between the UK and Morocco to strengthen collaboration in education, research and innovation fields. It is supported by OCP Group, which is one of the largest exporters of phosphate fertilisers in the world.
The initial phase of the partnership will focus on the delivery of seven agricultural research projects and the creation of a Centre for Doctoral Training, supporting the development of the next generation of African scientists and engineers.

Employment terms:

The successful candidate will be employed on an internationally competitive salary by the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) based at Benguerir, Morocco to work in the UM6P-Rothamsted-Cranfield partnership. The initial appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow will be for two years. At the end of the second year, the appointed candidate will be able to apply for a permanent position as Research Fellow at UM6P, subject to delivering a seminar and satisfactory performance as assessed by an evaluation panel.

Job/Project description:

The position is part of the UM6P-Rothamsted-Cranfield Partnership. The successful candidate will participate in an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Developing innovative remote sensing/automated crop phenotyping methods for African agriculture”.
Phenotypic characterisation of plants in the field plot setting requires fast, accurate, interactive, and reproducible methods to bring appropriate technologies to the plant. Optical sensing technologies have provided tremendous opportunities to improve crop phenotyping capabilities and there is a clear need to study and develop novel analytical paradigms to extract and process information from the overwhelming amounts of image data.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be in charge of software development using imaging technologies and modern machine learning approaches. Primary tasks will include developing and validating a new collaborative learning approach for extracting information from multiple image sensors including 3D lidar scanners. The successful candidate should have excellent skills in programming, specifically C++; python and MATLAB. Further experience in relevant 3D software packages such as Point Cloud Library would also be an advantage.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be primarily based at Rothamsted for the duration of the project but is expected to conduct research at all three partner locations in Morocco and the UK.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to:

*                      Contribute to teaching or other training activities (if applicable)

Criteria of the candidate:

*                      PhD in the field of [Computer Vision, 3D analysis, or closely related discipline]
*                      A strong background of knowledge and experience in 3D imaging and point cloud data
*                      Experience in developing and evaluating computer vision and machine learning techniques
*                      Strong publication record in leading international journals
*                      Experience in supervising students
*                      Experience in conducting fieldwork
*                      Aptitude for team work, problem solving and collaborative relationships
*                      Excellent verbal and written skills in English
*                      Organizational dexterity and ability to prioritize and manage multiple goals
*                      Positive attitude in changing fast-paced environments
*                      Active participation in improvement of self, processes and goals
